A list of some of the tools (game engines and sdks) available to help build games:
- irrlicht open source C++ light weight game engine, cross platform support
- OGRE Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine, free and open-source 3D graphics
engine
- clanlib multiplatform game library with sources and binaries available for both Windows
and Linux. It has support for 2D and 3D graphics (through OpenGL, DirectX, and
others), sound, and I/O (keyboard/mouse/joystick).
- NeoEngine Another free and open-source 3D engine; does more than just graphics.
- Genesis3D Yet another free and open-source 3D engine. A bit older than OGRE and Neo, with capabilities about on the level of Quake2.
- Torque (A real overkill game engine, has a bit of a learning curve too, but is full featured and opensource)
- Blender Creator Blender Creator is an excellent rendering package that now comes with facilities for creating games built in. The interface is less intuitive than some comparable packages, but it's free! It's available for many platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, BeOS, SGI, and more.
- Allegro Allegro is a long-running 2D game toolkit a lot of people have had success with in the past. The readme provides some information on what the toolkit can do.
