PROJECT 1 - DUE MARCH 5

In general, students enrolled in Bio 367 are expected to do the first of the two assignments described below, and students enrolled in CS246 are expected to do the second. However, alternative arrangements can be made in consultation with your instructors.

"Complex systems" is a rapidly evolving, as yet ill-defined, and multi -faceted area of inquiry which is supported by and perhaps best reflected on the World Wide Web. One can best get a sense of the current state of the field by exploring it on the web, with a resource list provided on Serendip providing one convenient starting point. You should spend time exploring complex systems on the web, and identify some aspect of it which is of particular interest to you (either in its own right or in relation to something else you are interested in). Write a six to eight page paper, with web links and suitable for web posting, which describes this particular aspect of complex systems, your interest in it, the current state of understanding, and future directions in which you think such work should move.

OR

StarLogo provides a very good environment for development of models illustrating important features of complex systems, but such models are currently usable only in a Macintosh environment and hence cannot be used interactively on the web. Using as a starting point one of the existing StarLogo models, create an implementation in Java which would make possible web-based interactivity.

All students will be expected to present their project to the rest of the class on March 5. ______________________________________________________________________
