September 25, 2008: Teyvonia Thomas receives 2008 Lincoln Laboratory Research Award
This award is given to Bryn Mawr undergraduates for outstanding summer science research in the fileds of biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics or physics. These awards were made possible by a grant to the college from the Lincoln laboratory of MIT. Teyvonia designed a six-legged robot as a part of her summer project with Prof. Doug Blank. Congratulations, Teyvonia!

IPRE Summer Faculty Workshop
We will be hosting the Summer Workshop for Computer Science Faculty on Using Robots to Teach CS1. 30 faculty from 13 states will be partitipating in the workshop. The workshop is sponsored by funds from Microsoft Research. More information on the workshop is available here.

Colloquium: Janet Abbate, Virginia Tech. University: Re-imagining the history of computing: Insights from women's lives
They say: Women can't use computers!
We say: Since when?

Having a double X chromosome doesn't mean technology is your mortal enemy, and this shouldn't be a groudbreaking realization. Women have played an important, if sometimes uncelebrated, role in the technological revolution of computing. So we invite you to learn a bit about this history from guest lecturer Janet Abbate.

Janet Abbate is an Assistant Professor of the Sceince & Technology Society at Virginia Tech. University. She has been doing research surrounding gender issues and computing since 1988. She is the author of "Inventing the Internet" (MIT Press. 1999). Her current research covers the history of women in computing from the 1960's to the present day.

Bubbles, an indoor robot blimp designed and developed by Douglas Blank (Computer Science), Michael Noel (Physics), Dianna Xu (Computer Science) and several students took part in the Indoor Aerial Robot Competition at Drexel University (IARC). See the story about the blim in this BMN article.

Bryn Mawr students entered the Mid-Atlantic Regional ACM Programming contest. The team, called Bryn Mawr Blue Pigs comprised of Catherine Chiu (class of 2004), Ioana Butoi and Darby Thompson (class of 2005). The team came third at the site (Wilkes Barre) and finished 36th over all out of 160 teams. Congratulations!
